Helen Maishman
NCPS Accredited Counsellor For Adults and Young People (Aged 11+)
I believe that everyone deserves a place where they can feel truly heard. A space where there is no judgement and no expectation to be anything other than yourself.
My journey into counselling was shaped by my own life experiences. Having faced personal challenges, I understand how overwhelming life can sometimes feel and how difficult it can be to make sense of painful emotions. Experiencing the benefits of therapy first-hand showed me the value of having someone alongside you who listens with compassion and helps you find your own way forward. That experience inspired me to become a counsellor so I could offer the same support to others.
For over 20 years, I have worked in care and educational settings with a wide range of need in education, mental health, behaviour and physical care. In continued work with local charities and private practice I support young people and adults in therapy through a variety of emotional challenges, including anxiety, stress, depression, bereavement, trauma and low self- esteem as they navigate some of life’s most difficult moments.
Who I Support
No two people are the same, which is why I don’t believe therapy should be either. I work integratively, drawing upon talking therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), mindfulness and creative expression to tailor each session to the individual sitting in front of me. I also understand that neurodivergent clients may experience therapy differently and I adapt sessions to create an environment that feels comfortable, accessible and most of all supportive.
Adults
You may be feeling overwhelmed by the demands of everyday life, struggling with anxiety, stress, depression, grief, relationship difficulties, a life transition or the lasting impact of past experiences. Perhaps you’re finding it hard to switch off, feeling lost or carrying the weight of everything on your own. Therapy provides a space to explore these challenges, helping you find clarity, regain balance and move forward with confidence
Young People (11 years+)
Being a young person today can feel incredibly challenging. Your child may be experiencing anxiety, low self-esteem, friendship or family difficulties, school pressures, bullying, identity concerns or overwhelming emotions that are difficult to put into words. Therapy offers a safe and supportive space where your child can feel understood and supported as they begin to make sense of their world.
Neurodivergence
“The world doesn’t need you to shrink into its boxes. It needs you to stand tall in your unique brilliance.” Ronen Dancziger
You may be finding it difficult to cope with sensory overwhelm, anxiety, masking, burnout, emotional regulation or feeling misunderstood by those around you. Everyday situations can sometimes feel exhausting or isolating. Therapy can be adapted to meet your individual needs, providing a calm, accepting space where you can explore your experiences in a way that feels comfortable and empowering.
